Before & After: A Midtown Home Gets a Modern Makeover
There's something truly magical about watching a space transform before your eyes—especially when it’s a home that’s ready to reflect its owners' evolving lifestyle and aesthetic. This Midtown renovation project is one of our favorite examples of how thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship can breathe new life into an older space.
The Challenge: Outdated, Closed-Off, and Dark
Built in the early 90s, this home in Midtown had great bones but lacked the open, airy feel today’s homeowners crave. The kitchen was tucked away behind walls, the living spaces felt disconnected, and the finishes were dated. The homeowners wanted a brighter, more functional layout without sacrificing the character of their home.
Key Goals:
Open up the kitchen to the main living area
Modernize finishes while keeping warmth and character
Improve lighting and bring in more natural light
Add functional storage without creating clutter
Before:
Kitchen:
Small, enclosed, and cut off from the dining and living rooms. Outdated oak cabinets and laminate countertops dominated the space.
Living Room:
A cozy but dark space that felt cramped due to the segmented layout and low lighting.
Master Bathroom:
Functional, but lacked the spa-like features and modern touches the homeowners desired.
The Process:
We kicked off with a full demolition of the kitchen walls to create an open-concept floor plan. Custom cabinetry was installed along with sleek quartz countertops, and we added a large center island perfect for both cooking and casual gatherings.
For the living room, we installed new wide-plank flooring and updated the fireplace with a modern surround. Recessed lighting and larger windows made a huge difference in brightening the space.
In the master bathroom, we swapped out dated tile and fixtures for a stunning walk-in shower, freestanding tub, and double vanity.
After: A Light-Filled, Modern Haven
Kitchen:
The heart of the home now features bright white cabinetry, matte black hardware, and gorgeous pendant lights over the island. The open sightlines allow for easy entertaining and a stronger connection between spaces.
Living Room:
Fresh paint, modern built-ins, and a reimagined fireplace instantly elevated the room. The space now feels larger, lighter, and more inviting.
Master Bathroom:
The ultimate retreat. Sleek tile, frameless glass, and warm wood accents create a spa-like atmosphere—perfect for unwinding after a long day.
