In reality, your ears make just the right amount of earwax. However, ear cleaning can also add to the problem if not done correctly. When you clean them too often, it signals the cells that produce earwax to step up and make more because your ear canal is getting too dry.
Myth #2 – Cotton Swabs Are The Best Choice For Removing Earwax
Nope, and they can be dangerous for inner ear cleaning. When using a cotton swab, you’re likely to push the earwax deeper into your ear canal, exacerbating the impaction. Besides packing wax against the eardrum, where it can cause infection, you run the risk of piercing it. Use cotton swabs only for outer ear cleaning, not for deeper ear cleaning or earwax removal.

Dr. Sally doesn’t go straight to digging around. She will look into your ear canal with a professional video otoscope, making it easier to see what’s going on inside your ear canal. That way, we know what we’re up against and can develop a plan for targeted removal.
#4 – We Clean Out All That Earwax
Most of the time, your ears just need a little warm water to soften up the wax and flush it out, but some issues are a bit more stubborn to deal with. For hard-to-reach or stubborn cases, we use a curette to reach in and scoop out any earwax that doesn’t come out on its own.
#5 – The Heavenly Feeling Of Relief!
We’re not sure exactly what heaven feels like, but some of our patients would describe the relief they feel after the stuffiness, muted sounds, and aching are gone as “heavenly.”
