“Trauma” occurs when we experience something intensely scary, upsetting, and/or painful. Often the event is sudden and threatens our sense of safety.
Military combat
Accidents
Natural disasters
Panic Attacks
Sexual and Physical Abuse
Abandonment, Neglect
People react to trauma in a variety of ways depending on several factors such as the intensity and frequency of the trauma, the temperament of the person experiencing trauma, and the experiences of support and validation (or lack thereof). However, we do see some common symptoms of trauma including:
Anxiety and fear.
Guilt, shame, self-blame.
Withdrawing from others.
Feeling sad or hopeless.
Feeling disconnected or numb.
Shock, denial, or disbelief.
Confusion, difficulty concentrating.
Anger, irritability, mood swings.
Our counselors are trained to assess for signs of trauma and help clients heal from intensely painful experiences without being retraumatized. A big factor in treating trauma effectively is validation (we believe you), nonjudgement (it’s not your fault), and taking our time (rushing or forcing treatment is damaging).
If you are experiencing symptoms of trauma, know that our counselors and staff believe you, your story, and your experience. We are here to help, support, validate, and guide you toward healing so that you can be free to live and enjoy your life.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding therapy, please don’t hesitate to call and speak with one of our therapists. We are happy to answer questions, help look into your insurance benefits, or explain how counseling might be beneficial to you. We provide a range of counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families. What makes counseling with us different than other clinics is in our unique approach to counseling - we don’t just help people reduce their symptoms or feel better temporarily. Instead, all of our counselors are trained in styles of counseling that help people better understand who they are, why they feel the way they feel, and heal from their core. We help people get to the root cause of their depression, anxiety, and more.
Connections Counseling is a self-pay practice. Many counseling centers are moving this direction because insurance often limits the type and length of care clinicians can provide. Being self-pay allows our therapists to focus fully on your needs without diagnoses or session limits being dictated by insurance. We provide a detailed superbill that you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Yes, we provide counseling for various issues, including sadness and depression, stress and anxiety, postpartum depression, eating disorders, trauma and PTSD, and more. If you are feeling difficulty in your relationships with others (family, work, romance, friendship, etc) or how you feel about yourself (low self esteem, self doubt, worrying all the time, etc), we can help!
In your first session, the therapist will want to begin getting to know you, your story, what brings you to therapy, what you’ve tried that has helped you feel better and what you’ve tried that hasn’t worked, and what you hope to get out of counseling. Together, our counselors work with clients to build a game plan to help you feel better and enjoy your life and your relationships more.
Yes, our team comprises highly educated, experienced, and compassionate counselors and social workers dedicated to helping you achieve your goals. All of our counselors have earned a bachelors degree as well as a masters level degree at minimum, and several of our counselors have earned multiple degrees and/or certifications. Our staff is constantly staying up to date on latest research and attend conferences together to continue learning and growing.
The duration of therapy varies based on individual goals and issues. Some clients attend for a couple of months while others find a lot of benefit in the weekly support of therapy and continue to meet with their counselor for years. You will likely feel relief within the first few sessions but it takes longer to make deeper, lasting change. Your therapist will work with you to develop a timeline that suits your needs. We don’t force people to stay, and we also don’t kick them out either.
Yes, therapists are bound by confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines, and this is very important to us. Information shared in therapy remains private. There are only a few rare exceptions to this including safety concerns for you or someone else. If you have concerns about privacy and confidentiality, please let your therapist know.
We offer both in person and tele-health counseling

Trauma is an emotional response to a distressing or life-altering event, such as an accident, assault, or natural disaster. It can also stem from prolonged emotional or psychological experiences, particularly during childhood. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) develops when the emotional impact of trauma persists long after the event, significantly affecting daily life. Symptoms of PTSD may include heightened anxiety, irritability, difficulty being in crowded spaces, and intrusive thoughts or flashbacks related to the traumatic experience.
While PTSD cannot always be prevented, early intervention can reduce its likelihood. Seeking therapy soon after a traumatic event, practicing stress management techniques, and building a strong support system can help in processing emotions in a healthy way. Individual factors like past experiences and genetic predisposition also play a role in how someone responds to trauma. Addressing symptoms early can be key to reducing long-term distress.
The duration of PTSD varies from person to person. Some individuals may experience relief within a few months, while others may struggle with symptoms for years. Factors such as the severity of the trauma, emotional resilience, and whether professional treatment is sought can all impact recovery. Therapy and coping strategies can help individuals regain a sense of control and reduce the lasting effects of PTSD.
